Alicia
The doll has a refined and gentle aura. I have named her Alicia. She has been
poured and dressed by me, but the original sculpture is by Doreen Sinnett.
She is made from Li-qua-Che, a pourable papier mache, which despite its fragile
quality, is a very strong and versatile medium, entirely suitable for doll
making. It has a smooth, satiny texture which resembles porcelain and gives a
realistic appearance to the doll.
Every aspect of her creation has extreme attention to detail. Her eyes are
hazel and her lips soft pink. A touch of blush accentuates her cheekbones.
She is fashionably dressed in a style predominant in the 1870's, where the
previous fashion of hoops was dispensed with and the bustle born. Her clothing
is made entirely from silk. Her inner clothing contains lace trimmed silk
pantaloons and a petticoat. Her petticoat is made in panels which serve to
flatter her form and give support and layers to her outer clothing which
comprises a raw silk skirt in a beautiful light olive green. This outer
skirt is also made in panels and has a decorative ruffle made from a printed
silk fabric with lace trim. Her bodice is made from a contrasting dark
olive green silk and trimmed with lace. The same colour and fabric is
found in her train, which is also edged with lace. Her hat is a delightful
milieu of roses, tulle, dried flowers, lace and ribbon. Her hair is
bound into a topknot, with residual strands being shaped into a ringlet which
falls halfway down her back. Soft curls frame her face. She is
wearing delicate jewelry and carries a purse and a parasol.
She stands at about 5 1/2 inches tall and is a perfectly scaled dollhouse
miniature. Pose her near a doorway as though she is heading out or perhaps
has just returned from a walk. She is absolutely beautiful and would be a
worthy addition to a miniature household.
