Melissa Melissa is made from Li-qua-Che, a pourable papier mache, which despite its fragile quality, is a very strong and versatile medium, entirely suitable for doll making. It has a smooth, satiny texture which resembles porcelain and gives a realistic appearance to the doll. She has been poured and dressed by me, but the original sculpture is by Doreen Sinnett.
Melissa lives in the 19th century, where roles played by women had been gradually changing from that of "wife", "mother" and "sister", to women seeking education, businesses and the right to vote. She is an extremely detailed doll. Her eyes are a soft brown and her lips pink. A touch of blush accentuates her cheekbones. She is dressed in a style predominant in the 1850's, where women wore hoop petticoats, constructed from wire. Melissa wears silk, lace trimmed pantaloons, a hoop petticoat and a regular silk lace trimmed petticoat. Her voluminous skirt is made of a soft pink silk, with a contrasting printed fabric forming the upper panels which drape gracefully and attractively. She wears a dark purple shirt which is partially covered by the bodice of her dress. Lace trim accentuates portions of her apparel. Her hat is a delightful concoction of silk edged with lace and embellished with dried flowers, ribbon roses, leaves and feathers. She holds a beautiful lace fan and a parasol. Her hair is a wonderful shade of blond with soft curls framing her face and ringlets that fall gently over her shoulders.
She stands at about 5 1/2 inches tall and is a perfectly scaled dollhouse miniature. Pose her near a doorway as though she is heading out or perhaps has just returned from a walk. She is absolutely beautiful and would be a worthy addition to a miniature household.
